Does agricultural intensification cause tipping points in ecosystem services?

چکیده

Abstract Context Agricultural intensification is being widely pursued as a policy option to improve food security and human development. Yet, there need understand the impact of agricultural on provision multiple ecosystem services, evaluate possible occurrence tipping points. Objectives To quantify assess long-term spatial dynamics service (ES) in landscape undergoing at four time points 1930, 1950, 1980 2015. Determine if thresholds or ES may have occurred are any detectable impacts economic development employment. Methods We used InVEST suite software models together with series historical land cover maps an Input–Output model these over 85-year period county Dorset, southern England. Results indicated that trends were often non-linear, highlighting potential for abrupt changes occur response slight underlying drivers. Despite fluctuations different ES, overall activity increased almost linearly during study interval, line increase productivity. Conclusions Such non-linear will be avoided future by approaches aiming deliver sustainable intensification. A number positive feedback mechanisms identified suggest could considered However, further research into feedbacks required fully determine systems.

Agricultural intensification and ecosystem properties.

Expansion and intensification of cultivation are among the predominant global changes of this century. Intensification of agriculture by use of high-yielding crop varieties, fertilization, irrigation, and pesticides has contributed substantially to the tremendous increases in food production over the past 50 years. Land conversion and intensification, however, also alter the biotic interactions a...

Conceptualizing ecosystem tipping points within a physiological framework

Connecting the nonlinear and often counterintuitive physiological effects of multiple environmental drivers to the emergent impacts on ecosystems is a fundamental challenge. Unfortunately, the disconnect between the way "stressors" (e.g., warming) is considered in organismal (physiological) and ecological (community) contexts continues to hamper progress. Environmental drivers typically elicit ...

Ecological intensification: harnessing ecosystem services for food security.

Rising demands for agricultural products will increase pressure to further intensify crop production, while negative environmental impacts have to be minimized. Ecological intensification entails the environmentally friendly replacement of anthropogenic inputs and/or enhancement of crop productivity, by including regulating and supporting ecosystem services management in agricultural practices....

Does the terrestrial biosphere have planetary tipping points?

Tipping points--where systems shift radically and potentially irreversibly into a different state--have received considerable attention in ecology. Although there is convincing evidence that human drivers can cause regime shifts at local and regional scales, the increasingly invoked concept of planetary scale tipping points in the terrestrial biosphere remains unconfirmed. By evaluating potenti...

Tipping Points in Schelling Segregation

Thomas Schelling’s spacial proximity model illustrated how racial segregation can emerge, unwanted, from the actions of citizens acting in accordance with their individual local preferences. One of the earliest agent-based models, it is closely related both to the spin-1 models of statistical physics, and to cascading phenomena on networks. Here a 1-dimensional unperturbed variant of the model ...
